Percussion Duet - 3 minutes 30 seconds
about the piece
Demons Under Dark Waters (2014) is a free metered percussion duet written for vibraphone, waterphone, a steel mixing bowl, triangle, triangle beater string bow, and water. The duet explores some of the endless depth that percussion offers: pitch bending with water; the piece is free of meter and pulse, thus allowing the performers to interpret the music at their own speed and expression. The piece depicts a dark night, the moon reflected off a smooth black surface. A ripple pulses through the water; a person walks in the water and is submerged. The person hears an eerie but beautiful sound below the water, the sound persuading the person to proceed deeper. Even though the heart pulses increase and the lungs burn for oxygen, the person proceeds further in to the water. All is quiet.
