Just like diets and working out, musicians everywhere have to take their music seriously so as not to be judged negatively by their approach and interpretation to medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic and serial music. These musical diets can become exhausting and can often leave the musician frustrated and possibly bored. But do you know what every person who workouts and diets looks forward to? CHEAT DAY!
Whata-Bass Clarinet! A Menu of Miniature Solos is a collection of every Texans’ favorite orange & white fast food restaurant menu items. It’s no surprise that if you grew up in Texas or you know someone from Texas, you or that person has brought up the iconic orange & white tented restaurant and have made claims about how it is far superior to its Californian rival.
With this work, you will be able to sink your musical teeth and reed (or reeds, bow, mouthpiece, or mallets) into this menu guilt-free, cheat day music!

I wanted to write this piece because of two reasons: 1) while under quarantine / stay-at-home order, and with what feels like the world coming to a still, I needed a fun piece to write that would take my mind off of the looming cloud that is COVID-19. 2) Texans do not mess around when it comes to the infamous orange & white tented restaurant. When I saw a poster of the restaurant on my friend Tim’s wall, I knew I had to do it and that I had write it for his instrument: bass clarinet. So with the need to write something fun but also something that people would absolutely get a kick out of performing, I came up with this “menu” of miniatures.
