Program Notes
You are with me (2018, 2020) is written for and dedicated to my uncle, George “Buddy” Lokey, a devout Christian, husband, and musician. Losing someone close to you, whether that be a family member or friend, I’ve found it difficult to place my emotions, as so many others do. While my faith does not run deep, I do believe that once we pass that there is a better place for us. With that mentality and faith, it becomes increasingly difficult to separate despair, heartache, and the crushing reality of never seeing that person again with the sigh of relief that the person is no longer in pain.
With a mixture of my own style of poly-rhythmic disruption and polytonality fused with chorale-like motion, I strived to find the lowest and most heart-breaking moments within the grieving process as well as the healing from God’s grace.
